I'm sorry, pardon? The first chapter has the main character getting RAPED by the love interest. It isn't even dubcon, it isn't cnc, it's full on rape. He was drugged. Do you not see the problem with this? Do you not see how romanticising these kinds of things are extremely problematic and even harmful towards real gay men in real life? Not only them, but rape victims, too?
Other types of porn fetishes certain acts, while stories like this fetishes gay men. That's the difference. And even if there wasn't one, just because someone does something doesn't necessarily mean you should copy it. It's not a superiority complex. It's an ability to look at these mangas with an objective point of view and criticize what must be criticized. Ignoring the problem doesn't make it go away.
It's not about owing me an explanation. It's about understanding the fact that what you are reading may potentially be harmful to a certain group of people. Read it for all I care. Even I read it. However, you should have the ability to understand when there is a problematic scene or trope and shouldn't turn a blind eye towards it. Like I said, Ignoring the problem won't make it go away.
Rape is pretty typical in yaoi. And I believe it is this way because it is a fantasy being sold to these women. This fantasy is extremely common for women btw, you can research this yourself. Now rape is obviously a horrible thing that no one should experience, I’m a survivor myself. However.. I am not triggered by any of these scenes I see in manga personally. It could be taken seriously..but I don’t think it really NEEDS to be taken seriously in these books. Very rarely will you find a realistic manga with relationships that are considered healthy in the real world.
Everyone has their own opinion on how far authors should take these kinds of things. In my opinion, as long as these stories are sold for adults to read and contain adult content that involve fetishes that a healthy adult can have..then I won’t bitch about it lol
With that being said, viewfinder should be at the bottom of your list to bitch at . I remember reading a manga from harada that had a bit to do with pedophilia that made me extremely uncomfortable. I forget the name. While I usually enjoy harada’ work- that was one I couldn’t stomach.
This is a bit funny, posting it on a yaoi site. Yaoi is mainly for women. Gay men rarely find it to their liking, and I understand them. The tropes are usually female fantasies. So you can say, ALL yaoi kinda fetishizes MLM relationships. But most women/girls who read it, know the difference between real gay couples, and yaoi couples. So I doubt it is harmful for real gay couples.
Also top tags of the manga contains rape. So I don't understand why you clicked on it then?
But that's the thing, they don't? You may, but the results of fetishizing being normalised is real people being shipped (not even celebrities, just regular people), people being told they're tops or bottoms by a straight woman (Ew sis no) and while we westerners understand this is a fantasy, you need to understand that is work is also being read in Japan. Japanese still isn't completely okay with lgbtq media and these kinds of works spread harmful stereotypes about gay men. It actually directly affects their lives in that sense.
I, too, am a survivor. While it may not trigger you, it definitely triggered me. You do not represent the whole community and neither do I, but for some reason, I believe that more people will be triggered by this than not.
But to fully understand why these kinds of work are wrong, we need to understand the primary marketing audience, and must look at it from a wider perspective. Straight women in Japan. Japan isn't accepting to gay people like the west is. Gay people cannot be open about their sexualities there. What that means is that these works (the ones that promote actually harmful stereotypes about gay people) will further perpetuate stereotypes that will directly be harmful to gay people in Japan. And you need to also understand that while it's good to say that only adults should read this, we must be aware that that will never actually happen in reality. Children and teenagers will read this whether they should, and young people often have a hard time differentiating between reality and fiction (unless the fiction is fantasy or something). What this means is that they will tend to bring fiction into reality.
You know, another thing that I must bring up has less to do with gay men and more to do with male rape victims. Male rape victims are often told they do not matter, that they should enjoy it, that it's not as serious. This applies very much to the west, too. You won't see a female getting raped and people applauding that (except in hentai But That's very often dubcon). When it happens to men in fiction, it's almost taking away it's seriousness. Could you imagine being a male victim who has been told their story isn't as important and then reading manga that romanticises and sexualizes rape?
Guys being told they are tops or bottoms is porbably not from yaoi. It can very well be from slash (western mlm shipping).
I don't think you can easily say that Japanese people don't understand it's fantasy. It's their work in the first place, so I am sure they know the difference. Also I don't think it affects gay couples lives in Japan, considering mainly women read yaoi, and they read it because they enjoy it. So yaoi won't change their opinion of gay men at all. Whether they were pro or not pro lgbt.... Most women (I think) imagine themselves as the uke in yaoi. So not just like a gay couple is having sex.
I think btw, hentai is more harmful than yaoi.
Also you have to keep in mind, that this manga is pretty old, and was intended as a one-shot. So that the main couple's relationship developed this way, is only because the author was kinda "pressured" to continue the story.
Well, sure, western slash shipping contributes to it, too. However, you'd be gravely mistaken if you think yaoi does not contribute to it, either. Just because women are the main readers does not keen men do not know the existence of yaoi or The tropes surrounding yaoi. I'm not saying Japanese people are stupid, but homophobia is taught and Japanese people are not at all educated on lgbtq issues like we are here in the west. I am almost certain a majority of them bring fiction into real life, not because they're dumb but because they haven't been taught any better. And therefore is actually does affect gay people. For example, a common trope is the seme sexually assaulting the virgin uke who has never even thought of being gay before. Do you not see how that could be harmful if a gay person were to come out and THOSE were the preconceived notions about him?
I don't care if hentai is worse. I'm not arguing for it. In fact, I could name a number of things wrong with it. However, that doesn't change the fact that yaoi bad if not worse at times (such as this one). And even if it was a one shot, the first chapter is rape centered so it doesn't change any of my points
And if, like you said, women just imagine themselves as the uke, why don't they just read straight porn? Don't you see, it's because they enjoy watching two men get it the exact manner straight men obsess over lesbian porn. It's that situation but reverse.
It is just an old sexual fantasy, women already should have given up on this cause we are supposed to be totally emancipated by now, but this is how world (still) works. I like this manga more because of the action parts and secondary characters than anything else. The old "rape" fantasy is way too old for me. Look at the explosive success that s*** of a movie called 365 had recently and you will understand.
I honestly don't believe that women and girls reading yaoi in Japan will turn very violent or bullying towards gay men...can happen of course. But I am not so sure about it.
You asking why women don't read straight porn instead? Have you seen hentai? Have you seen how much that is centered around male fantasy, usually with barely any story?
I think it's very easy to see why women would choose rather yaoi... Plus they don't have to feel themselves literally in the story, it's more indirect that way.
Yes, of course they also find two men together hot...But simply the reason is not just that.
Well well I just don't understand why r u even taken all this so seriously.Yeah he was raped ,he was drugged and what happened with him was bad but I don't think so author did that to insult anyone .What I have seen is that people especially Girls have really liked this plot so the author simply added it ,It did not have any special meaning or something. Moreover I think he was also trying to create a mafia type of atmosphere or also u can say that maybe author was trying to make readers believe how scary n cruel Asami is .what author wrote is just to fill that kind of strong scary image and moreover he just wanted to feel some hot sex .Man if u really thinks this much then I think u should stop thinking so much or else I will always be troubled with these kinds of idiotic thoughts

Why do people like this? I'll never understand the straight girls that fetishize MLM. First chapter and there's already rape. But of course, rape is never treated seriously in these types of stories. I feel physically ill.
