Wow. Your comment totally blew me away. Taking "sexism" completely out of the debate and opening a whole new door. Brava. Looking at things from this point of view I can see precisely what you mean. Thank you for shedding a different light on the topic and also for encouraging me to re-read a manga that I loved the first time around.

Like "Venus"'s interpretation, I am also impressed by yours. Seeing words of kindness and encouragement where others have seen belittlement makes your interpretation all the more interesting. You have, like "Venus" encouraged me to re-read a manga and try to see things from both your points of view. Personally, I love it when someone sees things differently from me. It opens my eyes to other possibilities and I am very grateful that you took the time to share your thoughts. Now, I get to open my mind further and see a "new" part of this manga that I hadn't considered. Thank you so much.

I actually just finished re-reading this through the eyes of your interpretation and now I get precisely what you mean. Throughout the manga Icchan is incredibly supportive of Yuzu. He never says anything less than encouraging and always gives him reasons to feel secure. In the "kitchen fire" scene, Icchan was definitely showing his support for Yuzu more than he was showing sexism toward "Sempai". Icchan was trying to prove his point that Yuzu is capable and reliable and doesn't "need" protection from him or anyone. Rather, Icchan "protects" Yuzu because he loves him, but Yuzu doesn't love Icchan because he can protect him. I know that sounds convoluted, but I'm not sure how better to describe it.
Thank you for giving me a chance to re-read this manga with a different perspective. I enjoyed it originally, but found I liked it so much more this time around.

Sorry... But all I see is a girl trying to play a man because she's tall and do a little of kendo... It doesn't mean she can do anything... :v
You should know your limits... The author didn't want to put down all women(I mean, the author is a female for God's sake), but she wanted to show that a woman should know her limits...
We can brag about how independent we are all we want... But is impossible to be THAT MUCH independent... Is impossible...
We as human beings can't be perfect at everything... And YES, the majority of women are not stronger than men...
You know why? Just search about it, men always did the heavier jobs, the most dangerous jobs...
Majority of women can't beat a man unless she's trained to do so, that's how the real life works, think to yourself, do you think you would be able to protect your boyfriend in case something bad happens?
If you two are stopped on the street and the guys who wants to rob you start to beat your boyfriend, will you be able to beat them back? I wouldn't be able to...
I know my limits...

I can't address everyone, but thanks to your comment and Venus's I reconsidered this manga and I'm glad that I did.
I couldn't like from the beginning the senpai because of her attitude towards Takatsuki, and I really loved Yuzu's character. It reminded me of other manga where the shorter one wanted to wait to being taller and in doing so he kept pushing his insecurities on his SO. Yuzu's didn't. They encouraged and supported each other.
But I do feel it was an unfortunate choice of words from the mangaka like This Bitch pointed out. And I'm rather sad that this took so much attention from me that kept me from truly enjoying the manga and appreciate it for what it is.
Now thanks to you I was able to put this behind and truly appreciate the many good points in this story.
Thank you!!! (σ^▽^)σ
I wanted to like this because I'm into shorter semes and taller ukes but chapter 3 left me cold. I thought Hiiragi was really cute and great and then Shibata cuts her down because in an emergency, she's "as helpless as any girl" (something like that). I remember now why I stopped reading this. That was annoying as hell.
