He didn't hate her he was jealous of her. Drugs and Duke Zena lies made it seem as if though he hated her. But he had genuine reasons to be cruel. He thought Tia killed their child because she hated him and she didn't like the idea of having his child because DUKE DICKHEAD TOLD HIM that.
It actually gave us more background onto why Ruve hated her so much the first time around, not saying it was right but now we know the reasoning behind it and why things are so different now.
