Because he tends to hurt the people who get close to him. Clark is a psychopath or a sociopath (or at least has the qualities of one) so I think he finds it hard to relate to people empathetically. He comes off as insensitive when it comes to relationships because of this which makes it hard on the people who love him.

I think its because alex would kill the prosecutor if the prosecutor did love clark too.. because then the prosecutor would also be one of clark choice not to be with alex. Thats the reason alex kill the dr right. Cause clark and the dr once have feelings with each other.. thats how i think about it
