You can see quite a lot of scratches on him from branches he hit on the way down and in the page that he jump down in chap 7 u can see trees near the building. If there were no trees then he would had hit his head and dies on the spot, if he survive the fall he would still broke every bone in his body and be in a lot of pain. So yeah, trees. Maybe the he was looking at her at an angle or maybe he roll a bit away from the tree or the artist forgot. Sorry for my bad english
