If some of the movies I've seen have any accuracy to them, there was not just gold and silver, there was paper used. They were most likely promissory notes that could be exchanged for gold or silver (since let's face it, paper is much lighter to carry around)
Still can't get around that dollars exist before in an ancient kingdom when thr country using that currency doesn't exist yet.
