isn't "cosa nostra" also a denotation for a type of Italian mafia (family)? I think the one in Palermo? I know there are different strands, the ndrangetta in Calabria, the Camorra in Naples etc (think there was also a TV series based on the books of a investigative journalist with that name)... genuinely curious ^^

No, not at school per se (changed schools/schooling systems a couple of times actually) - it's a combination of easily getting enthralled with (very) random topics, thus resulting fascination, bordering on obsessive, in getting to know all there is/acquire a decent background knowledge ~.~; and adequate reading speed, I guess ^^;
