I’m so confused on what happened. Were they in their bodies or not in chapter 5?

Beginning of chap(where he picks up the note) they swapped bodies went about their days and then they slept into the next day and swapped back we just didn’t see what happened during their day cuz the confession was meant to be a surprise or whatever
