I think claude himself knows that athy is his first and last daughter. Unless he.....
He did in the book and he did before the curse. But his memory might be erased because of the curse. I think since he wasn't claiming Jeanette and wanted nothing to do with her his brother put the curse on him. OR maybe when Jeanette was introduced to him in the novel he was cursed to love her and thats what was seriously killing him and maybe the curse drove him mad and that's why he killed the novel version of Athy because she was the only way to remove the curse.
