So he was an illegitimate child of the previous Emperor. The previous Empress was forced to adopt him since she can't bear children. He was abused and maltreated everyday. This wasn't the worst part. The previous Empress was seriously disgusting. She forced the Emperor to kill his own mother. He didn't even know that he was adopted or that it was his own biological mother he killed until after she was dead. This caused some serious trauma to the Emperor.
Rosemond was also abused when she was a kid. She was raped by her half brother and when her parents found out they just let it happened. So their "love story" was kind of like "Only you can understand my pain because you went through something similar" type of BS.
At least, the Emperor thought they were in love. It turns out Rosemond never loved him and was only using him to gain power so that she can take revenge on her family. She actually shouted to his face that she never loved him and that no one would love someone like him. She's fking disgusting..
Now, the reason why I only feel pity for him was because he was aware of some of Rosemond's evil deeds later on in the story but chooses to turn a blind eye to it because of love and that he shouldn't be mistreating her because he'll become a hypocrite (to be honest I also don't know how that makes him a hypocrite).

first of all. what an angel thanks for typing it all out ╥﹏╥
ugh so he’s just a stupid boi blinded by love. what the hell, i dont think he deserves any pity then. an emperor who turns a blind eye to evil deeds and has no sense of justice. thats just despicable. from what you’ve said, even rosemond sounds more applause worthy for stepping up to seek power for revenge. problem is just she hasnt realised her ways are not the way to go. (she gotta die and get reincarnated lol)

I don't think she deserves any praise at all. She manipulated someone, took advantage of their weakness, and used it for her own purposes. Not only that, after telling all that shit about not loving him in the first place, Rosemond had the audacity to try and rape him by drugging him with aphrodisiacs. She continuously tries to assassinate the Queen and uses underhanded methods just to get the Queen's seat. She's a great villain though, I gotta give her that.
There's also this secret she knew and used it to blackmail a Duke that serves as her pillar in high society (so that she won't become a measly daughter of a Baron). That secret had something to do about the Emperor's parents and the previous Queen. Although, as to what that secret was, it hasn't been revealed yet in the available free chapters of the novel.
For the case of the Emperor, I don't think it was his entirely fault. He was a victim of manipulation. And he didn't try to defend Rosemond that deeply. Instead, he stood by and watched but did nothing about it. A case in point is when the first assassination attempt of the Empress happened. He was together with the Empress and was seriously injured from protecting her. The Empress asked the assassins who hired them and you know that typical thing where "Okay I'll tell you because your gonna die anyways" yeah that happens. It was revealed that it was Rosemond who sent them. The Empress told the Emperor this later on but during the trial in court where Rosemond was accused of assassinating the Queen, he just stood idly by even though he KNEW she was responsible for it. Even though he didn't defend her, it was still shitty of him to not say anything despite knowing the truth.

ಠ__ಠ heh. did the emperor stop seeing her after she told him she never lover him and thats why she wanted to rape him? get herself preggo as to not fall out of favor kind of thing?
ive got to say, as much as i dont like the pathetic emperor (he sounds goddamn frustrating), the drama is on point. like the secret. if its about the royal family, why is she not blackmailing the emperor but the duke instead.

Yeah he did but Rosemond was appointed as an official Royal Concubine after it was found out that the Queen was infertile. Her purpose as a concubine is to produce heirs but since he didn't wanna face her after all that shit she told him she drugged him so that they can do the hanky panky. Her plan was to eliminate the Queen once she becomes preggo so that she will be promoted to Queen.
As for the blackmailing, it was said that the secret would destroy (emotionally I think) the emperor if he ever found out about it. Rosemond needed someone to do the evil deeds for her so she wouldn't get her hands dirty and since the Duke was involved in the secret she chose to blackmail him about it.
