Lol this is a year late but to answer this question, in certain cultures a man and woman together do indeed garner such rumors. For example, I was at a family gathering and my cousin was with me. We were only standig and talking to eachother but later on, my aunt asked me if he was my boyfriend. Apparently, the older women were gossiping about me and my cousin ┑(￣Д ￣)┍ It was shocking because they should know that he was my cousin since they were related to him and in our culture relatives who share the same surnamr can not, by any means, get married to eachother. Not sure which made me more speechless, their thought process or the fact that they didn't recognize my cousin
