I don't think they ment it like that. Whether you want it or not in many countries homosexuality IS a taboo subjects. It's still a sensitive subject and sensitive subjects change slowly. In States and some part of Europe it becomes a normal thing (altough still not for everyone) while in other part of Europe and Asia it's smth disgraceful, perverted etc. It's a process, for sure, to normalise that Love can happen not only between Man and Woman and that Queer Love is okay. Unfortunately, there will probably always be someone who looks down on homosexuals and consider it a taboo subject. That's just the world we live in. The best we can do is spread the word and teach our children (or necies or students, whatever) that it's okay to love who we want (as long as they're legal XD)

But, even it was a man-woman relationship, in kabuki world its still taboo romance between the actors. From what i known before, in maaaaany yearssss ago... woman is also playing parts in Kabuki. But since there are so many scandals between the actors, this is one of the reasons that they make it official as a male only play.
But yeah, i am assuming the brother more concern since gensuke is not only in relationship with his co-star, and also a man and came from a rival family to add. (mangaka didnt put it that way tho, but.. maybe)
Am sorry if i put the wrong word, but there's still a lot of character in other manga got rejected by their family and friends when they came out the closet. Let be honest, not everyone still cant accept this relationship (in normal yaoi world). It will be different if "the world" is a fluffy yaoi world (where everyone accept and didnt judge). Or will more different if this story is inside an omegaverse world.

Everyone has their own reaction and opinion.
Not all can accept this taboo relationship, at first.
to add, both Gensuke and Sougo came from big Kabuki family and have a bright future.
this kind of relationship usually will affect them and the family anyhow.
we cant say his action and reaction was the best, but for me, his reaction was more normal to avarage ppl.
