The logic here escapes me...

Being proficient at medicine is something to be envied. But actually using your talent in medicine to save people is shameful?
Or is that just because she's a noble lady? In which case... Glad time have changed... not the best of times... But better to me than then.

That's because for a rich family's daughter having the need to learn any kind of profession indicates that her father (or husband) isn't able to earn enough money to let her live a proper lady's lifestyle full of embroidery, calligraphy, music and tea parties.
While poor families need to let their wives and children work to make a living, rich men could show of, by earning enough, so that there was no need for their wives and daughters to work.
It was the desired lifestyle for every family till the 1950s.

Exactly this. Back then, a woman who can do more than look pretty and entertain men, was frowned upon. Especially if they're from a noble family.

Okay... though it annoys me to heavens it does follow a certain logic. Thank you for your kind answer.

    Only in the western countries.
In the rest of the world women being housewives after marriage is still the desired lifestyle, even if the graduated from university and worked before their marriage.
