Now I understand why the family Jeannette pictured bothered me so much. They are matrioska dolls. There cannot be two dolls with the same size unless you replace one of them.

It felt strange to me. Matrioska dolls are supposed to represent a family, and as such they are made with different sizes to "complete" the bigger one (which is usually the mother). This is why you cannot have two matrioska with the same size. Also they are all decorated with the same colors/patterns as they are a whole family. In the mental image Jeannette made, Athy and Claude clearly belong to the same pack, as they complete each other (colors-size and such), but Jeannette seems to belong to another pack. She is the same size as Athy and her colors are nothing like Athy and Claude's. Seems like she is aware of this, but just ignores it, which bothers me

It did not bother me actually, i felt like it was an intelligent hint about how jeannette does not belong to their family and there is no space for her and she knows it. It is a bit sad but also a hint about where the story is going
