This is my theory so don't take it seriously :
Remember when he said that there is a thin glass between the girls? I think the scene when he swing the hammer kinda reflect that he try to break that glass, by pushing the important issue for the girls to solve it. Since he is a simple person, like 'take it or leave it'

They were in love with each other, but their feeling were too muddied and hesitant, hence the guy took action to break the "glass" between them
can someone please explain to me what happened?? did the guy kill both of those girls?
