Damn rereading one of my first manga and realizing that this one is smarter than it seems. In the early chapters when maron gets the white pieces it essentially means she is taking one from God or kami-sama while chiaki gets black. If white is god and black is devil(maou) then they are taking one from the side that they aren’t on because thats how chess works
