some sports fields are multi purpose so that could be some form of astroturf that can be removed for different sports they are not very common here in the US but i have seen a few in Japan as well as some in Korea many years ago and the reason many of them are like that is due to space constraints

no worries as i stated i have only seen a FEW schools that had playing fields like that so it is not to unexpected that many would know they even exist
