i know not to complain about a manga bt still that ending, yes its obvious they had a past bt the way he stared at Douma... it just leaves the impression that he still isnt over him

Exactly. They both needed each other got together but it was never like lovey dovey. It mas more like admiration and lets just have sex. Ryouji will always admire Doumu but he now LOVES in a lovey dovey way with feelings and all Hane.
