I was excepting the dog to die so when that didn't happen I was shocked. I was even more shocked however by the twist that the owner was a robot. Makes sense now that I think about it, sense everyone else in the town was a robot.
As for the reason the dog didn't recognize the owner; previously they had been playing and the dog had rubbed its scent off on the owner. Remember that the owner complained about all the fur that had gotten on him? Now that the "new" owner arrived he didn't have any of the dog's scent on him so in the dog's mind, this was an entirely new person. Therefore the dog refused to leave the "old" owner behind. Very heartbreaking and a smart twist.
