Honestly, Huan Wen situation with his grandfather reminded me of a conversation I had with my father two years ago. He wasn't that persistent but I still remember how hurt and shocked he felt. He was the same when I came out. Seeing how Huan Wen seems to be part of the lgbtq+ and also his desire not to get married (for a reason we don't yet know, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's bc he doesn't plan to have a straight relationship), I can't help but remember all the times I felt like I was disappointing my parents. It hurts. And it's hard to not go along with what they want.
However, even though his grandpa hurt him with his words, I wouldn't call him selfish or a bad person. He's really worried about Huan Wen and he knows what it feels like to be all alone. Besides, how old is he? 60, 70? Can you guys imagine how he was raised? I am not saying it's okay to say whatever you want bc you're old, but we can not pretend it doesn't matter. He's an old man in China - a place where people can't even draw two guys kissing nowadays. Of course we can't expect him to behave as we - in our 20s, 30s and often westerns - would. Besides, he seems to love and care deeply for his grandson. Happiness in marriage might be all he knows, can we really blame him? Instead, I think we should hope that Huan Wen can be strong enough (and get enough support to) stand his ground and explain to his grandpa that yeah, he really doesn't want to marry and have children. And we all might have to deal with the fact that his grandpa may never be okay with it - which doesn't make him a bad person.
Anyway, I am really glad to see DJun portraying such realistic relationships. This manhwa is def one of my favs.
