What he said to his mom is nothing lol. It's normal talk. His mom sucks for real, she's ordeng her son to study 2 hours a day when he has already become independant and old enough to know what he should do. It would have been nicer of her to ask him how he is doing/ is he fine you know.

I might have sound harsh srry but as you said, each country may have a different mindset. Tbh, in France, between friends you can share your opinion to this extent, it's greatly appreciated and means you care about your friend well-being. But, there's a limit too, and the limit is easily reached when it comes to someone you hardly know.
Sometimes it's nice to have an objective opinion coming from your friend.
