It's a fictional story. People tend to feel related/attended or whatever by stories. In most stories there are people that you don't like even if they are "good" for example Macbeth. In macbeth, macbeth is actually the villain and the protagonist therfore many people hate macduff because he defeated him. People tend to hate characters that make the live uncomfortable or harder for the MC is normal and you don't have to take it seriously or personally. Or are you Jeanette?

    P. S. I'm a writer too so I can understand why the author writes Jeanette like this. The author does it on purpose, they knows that many people will dislike Jeanette even tho she behaves "good"

actually I read a while back in another comment when discussing jennettes character with someone who could translate the Q&A korean fan questionnaire that Spoon had actually been surprised to see so many people disliking the character, so it definitely wasn't intentional and she wasn't trying to make her unlikable or unsympathetic (i cant speak for the novel though) if they was trying to make her unlikable they could have just thrown her in with the lumps of archetypal petty jealous female tropes out there and left it at that, not try and have athy establish a bond or get closer with her by having them spend so much time together, help the other overcome their problems, and support each other emotionally. so far jennette has provided athy with safe sanctuary when she was left to the streets, kept her secrets from her own family for her, and was the one to encourage athy to give her dad another chance by going to see him. like I dont understand how you could hate someone actively supporting the main lead. P.S its nice that your a self proclaimed writer. I'm a self proclaimed astronaut ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭ I'm typing from space

yeas she is soo "supportive" and "encouraging" that after she knows that Athy was sad after the fight with her dad and her dad try to murder her she starts to talk about how "fun it was to meet him and get closer to him" ble ble ble what a great friend to open your wounds in your face uh? ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭ okay

Hahahhha first of all I read something else many people (Koreans) doesn't like Jeanette and I never ever heard about that the author was/is surprised even tho I read spoilers about the novel but yea go on.
Second I really like you sarcasm I'm not a "self proclaimed" writer I'm an actual writer and I even have 3 books (with other) where my stories were published. Give me your insta and I can show you lol. And I think it's pretty sure that Jeanette is like a rival to athy. I don't know why you take it personally, maybe you lived a life like Jeanette (sorry ) or maybe you are just a little kid taking fiction to serious

maybe its just me but I get annoyed when people bring up certain identity labels/professions out of nowhere in a discussion to validate their opinions credibility, it just ends up sounding pretentious, sorry about the sarcasm.

Look, being a writer is impressive but doesnt make you any more likely of understanding Spoons intentions for her character before a story is finished, its pretty presumptions to act like you do for sure. You just dont know and you dont HAVE to be one to have a grasp on basic storytelling mechanics or niches in writing. if a character is meant to be an antagonist there is usually foreshadowing involved, buildup and conflict. we dont get that from jennette, shes never once shown being resentful or jealous of her cousin and shes never done anything intentionally knowing it would hurt athy to show shes capable of any ill will, from the very beginning her only motivation was to be closer with her family. In fact I'd say the complaints surrounding her character "lacking any agency" being "a third wheel" are valid criticisms, Spoon could have put more work into fleshing her out a bit more in this regard. give her a character arc that has her growing out of that sheltered personality she started out with, confronting the people who have been lying to her, her whole life. that would be interesting to see.

the only "antagonists" in this story are her father Anastacius, dead mother, and Mr white who has lied to her to try and further his own goals. being kept in a isolated environment and restricted from asking basic questions about herself that she has the right to know.. growing up like that would make anyone pretty freaking naive, but this was a situation she had very little control over. its not her fault.

The "Pure Hearted, Naive, Good Girl who just wants to be Loved"
is a classic staple within every Otome game and I believe thats the kind of character jennette was meant to be (because they are inside a book version of one) so when haters criticize her for being NICE, thats sort of the point of her whole character. its pointing out something obvious & intentional as a serious criticism and they dont even realize it, its kind of funny.

"I never ever heard about that the author was/is surprised even tho I read spoilers about the novel but yea go on." the experiences of other people aren't limited to just what you happen to see or what revolves around you y'know. I dont use Instagram btw
