I don't particularly love their relationship because they have obviously different love languages and they really don't know how to communicate.

Everyone seems mad but Cole had a very low esteem. Remember that Alex also almost give up because of his low esteem? A little kindness from others will make him cry of a river. He thought he never been treated kindly but apparently Alex really love Cole but Alex didnt usually said it in words and showed any gestures except for sex. Sex ia the only way Alex said "I love you" to Cole but Cole to absorbed in sex too realized it.
