Depends...

Honestly I get the hate for Adelaide she took it too far but in a sense it is sort of justifiable. It depends on how you look at it. She just wanted to confirm there were equally strong feelings between them. But she went overboard.

The thing a hate the most about these romances is when their like "I don't deserve you", "be mine" (usually males) "let me be yours" (usually females) or "stay by my side" (male again).
Why does it have to be one person is below the other? Why does it always seem that one party is madly in love while the other is somewhat of an observer?

Lol if she wanted to make sure his feelings were genuine there was no need to play such games. Just be direct instead of making things overly complex.

Yeah she's a selfish character but there's a line between selfishness and meanness.

Tdlr: there was no need for him to think "I don't deserve you"

This was what I was saying! I understand wanting him to propose grandiosely and wanting him to be direct but it would have been less painful (because her sudden disappearance no doubt freaked this man the hell out) if she had just opened her mouth and said it. The Duke was clearly almost at the end of healing some of his trust issues, there was no need to push that hard.
