I believe that was the kind man who let Tanjiro sleepover at his home one stormy night after a day of hardwork in town. But that sleepover made Tanjiro come home 1 day too late to save his family from Muzan.

He could not have protected them at all. He used to be a normal boy. That sleep over saved Tanjirous life. If he went home that night everyone would be dead by now (Nezuko would have been killed by Giyuu)
True. What I meant to say was try to protect them. Bc after his father passed away. He being eldest son became a substitute as the paternal figure of the family. So he sees it as his duty to protect his family and earn money for them to live off of. So Tanjiro regrets not being there with his family when facing death at their doorsteps.
