Is the bad guy gonna be recruited? If not, why talk about his past?

To give the character depth...?

It really is suspicious... John-senseis family were bad guys and obviously didn't get fleshed out characters and simple, mean looks.
Now this guy gets a tragic backstory of being 'manipulated' by his family and he doesn't exactly look mean.
I am afraid this story might not have very much depth...
