Well, yes. The fact that it's with children is even worse. But aside from the obvious "sexual assault is bad", my problem is more about the lack of consistency in the storytelling. You depict the Bad Guys as sexual predators at the beginning of the story and you strongly establish this behavior as "evil", "dark side", "Attributs of the Villains". If suddenly your Good Guys do it and it's "okay", it creates a disconnect.
Lots of stories have consent ambiguities and, if you put aside the concern of "It's a bad thing in real life", if they are shown as normal in the story you accept it as part of this world and can still enjoy yourself. It's what we call the suspension of disbelief. But if the story break it's own rules, the reader is lost.
So yeah, there was no actual rape. But seeing Sys adopt a behavior so close to one previously attributed to the Bad Guys put him in the position of the villain because he does something you were actually TOLD is bad in this world. And it send very mixed message who makes lots of people very uncomfortable. Unless it's a voluntary foreshadowing. Which I hope because it would make the storytelling really solid. But I also hope not because I love Sys.
Anyway, I have mixed feelings about it.
I hope I was clear. Sorry for the length of my comment and thank you for coming to my TED Talk ! XD
I"m pretty sure Sys is a minor character, other than talking sometimes with the king he isn't that important to the plot. there is much more important characters than him.
how is he the center? what did he give the king that sooo important other than to listen to him whine a lot? the wizard character is more important than him.
Sys help him become king, but he is pretty useless now.
I love the story and the characters but I'm not gonna lie, this whole massage thing made me extremely uncomfortable. Way to predatory for the context and someone who's supposed to be one of the good guys. Not a nice way to start a relationship.
And let's not forget they killed the previous king because he was a sexual predator. (Among other things, yes. But that was one of the biggest reasons.)
