Im late and decided to reread this but basically there was going to be a war between the humans and the vampires. So Eric who was neither human nor vampire sacrificed himself (aka saying it was his fault/pretending to be the bad guy) so shell, who sees vampires and humans as equal would be put in charge. Now that Eric is the bad guy, he is forced into hiding and shell visits him whenever hes off or smth (not very often cuz hes like in charge of everything now.) so they still end up together but they don’t get the full relationship that they deserve. Kinda bittersweet ending
