I think I read somewhere that the only way for them to produce children is reproducing with their relatives. Like its not possible for them to reproduce with anyone other than their family. Im pretty sure but not 100 percent

In the twin brother's case, he didn't know. When a girl was born they would say they died and the doctor would raise them away and then introduce them later as strangers.

O believe it was said that their blood is special and the "more pure" it is the stronger their power is.

In the original novel it's revealed that their not exactly human, the Taran bloodline is basically comprised of an old tribe of people (demons???/similarly strong demo humans) but as the Taran's were the only ones left they had to resort to marrying within their unit. What began as endogamy, as their numbers shrank farther became outright inbreeding due to the inability of normal human women to conceive male Taran's that would ultimately carry the line forward. This began a really fucked up practice of the male children being progeny of a brother, half sister pair. The half sister being conceived by a woman of human origins with very specific conditions to her growth, menstruation and secondary sex development. This is due to regulated consumption of an herb that stops her development altogether until the male Taran has impregnated his half sister producing a full blood Taran boy, then he matches up the impregnation of the "normal" human woman, they're born around the same time- the half sister is raised separately and betrothed to the heir and the sick cycle repeats itself.

Also note, the human mother of the daughter was typically killed pretty early on.

Daughter will be raised outside of the house. Meanwhile the son is born by the half-sister prepared by the former head. The daughter will be married to the son...been goin on for generations..messed up family..
