Some of the names we can cross-check in Neko Neko Honey, such as the Gen-Chan. I don't remember his older brother being that one (?), but I assume he's Aki because it's the only Japanese sounding name he gets given. But I really wanted to know the original Japanese names of the dogs...

Right, Gen-chan even became Xuantai in chapter 5. Well, I think he was talking about Gen-chan. And for the dogs, it feels just weird to see chinese names when all the rest is in japanese.
It was not bad. Though it was confusing sometimes because of all those names (sometimes it even changed to chinese names). I still wonder what the "real" names are supposed to be.
