A modern setting? Don’t we already have plenty of such yaoi stories with naive bunny characters like Nakyum and rich/handsome/bad boy semes? This story’s main selling point is the historical setting, which is somewhat rare, take that away and you strip the attractiveness of it and all that will be left behind is the generic yaoi tropes. And let’s be honest the characterization in Painter of the Night is not that creative or unique. The portrayal of Korean old society is the most exciting part of it with the occasional smattering of dark brutality and cruelty. (๑•ㅂ•)و✧

Well ofc I love the historical setting, and I realise that is one of the main brilliant elements of the story. It’s just that if I were to try to imagine those two in a healthy relationship (which I know isn’t realistic cuz yaoi lol) it is impossible to see them in that light in the current life these characters are living, so my mind wandered and I came to think of “Hosik’s story” where the characters are originally placed in modern time, but later in the story it becomes apparent that in the previous lives of the characters, they knew each other. And spicing up this historical setting with some folk lore surrounding rebirth and such, wouldn’t be something I would hate. And besides, I dunno if you have seen it, but the author posted an artwork of Seungho and Nakyum looking fineeee in modern clothes, so I guess I was just imagining things after I saw that ¯_(ツ)_/¯
But in the end, I agree with your opinion to a certain degree, I will still love this no matter if the author happens to change the story altogether and put them in a modern setting or not, it was merely the product of my imagination running wild.
