He's such a genuine and relatable character. He was hurt beyond what he could imagine when he thought he'd lost Ed and he thought he could never have Ed and so he became the bad guy. Everyone who judges him act like they've been through what he did or that they always act like saints.
We have to give their life situations some credit...
Also, I'm pretty sure that's him CRYING in the rain going "why did I have to deny it if you could do something like that so easily" -- he came from a place where he really tried to cherish Ed and not push what he thought were his disgusting feelings on to him. And then he closed his emotional self off when he thought he could lose Ed at any time.
