It makes sense though, the old god said a new god would replace him, and maybe that new girl, has the power to replace the gods . . .
You have a point, but the god that was under water was wearing the same clothes as the old man was, or rivers soul could have been put into the body of the old man?

He wouldn't have the same appearance, if the souls were switched out. Those eyes though . . . those are River's eyes. Besides, we all know it would never be a good idea to completely kill off your main character before the story even gets started!
I never said he'd died, he could get resurrected or the river god could turn him into his successor, or as you said he could be the god
