Nah he had 10 whole years. He only grew interested in her due to her new appearance. Why not before? He didn’t even consider her until then.
Well, looks do often play a role in starting something, in getting noticed. It can be just a start.
My brother and sister in law got together that way. He went on an extreme diet and fitness and became really thin. She saw him and thought she must have that man. They are happily together for six years already. He is as fat a before, she looks just like a mother of two that she is. But they love each other and find one another beautiful.

1. Toxic Femininity: throughout the ENTIRE story they keep downgrading, belittling and basically insulting Minami on her "lack of female appeal" and the fact that she's a 30 y/o virgin. Machida LITERALLY tells her to "doll up" and maybe she'd get a boyfriend in ch1. don't get me wrong, if u want to improve yourself (whether it'd be dietary, clothing, etc.) good on u, that's called self-care and self-love. and it does seem that Minami becomes confident through changing her outward appearance, the way the story plays out...it looks like its trying to say the lesson here is "u have to be pretty to get a boyfriend" or "a woman must be 'feminine' or she'll be a lonely virgin" etc.
2. Machida as a character *inhales* BOI. he's so apathetic and indifferent UNTIL the very end like??? he says this could be a second chance to patch their relationship yet he doesn't act on it?? he doesn't even seem to try? like damn dude maybe try to understand instead of just hurting her over and over again. and i know "he was just scared that she would reject him! he just didn't want their relationship to end!" but like dude....TRY. DO SOMETHING, DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE. like i seriously was hoping their relationship would end when i saw how much of an ass he was in ch1-6
overall, i think in general its OKAY like i don't completely hate it. but if u think more into its really just....lazy writing? its not the best out there (of course i have read better and worse) but if this is ur cup of tea then hey, go for it ain't nobody stopping u from liking the things u like. this just my own opinion ╮(￣▽￣)╭
