Japanese authors usually use this to demonstrate how happy a character is to come back home to their loved ones, because if you're single and live alone, there'd no one to say that to you.
One another example is the demonstration of "making miso soup for someone everyday", it might not ring a bell to you, but to japanese readers, it is the declaration of "I want to be with you and take care of you for the rest of our lives".
It's not your culture to do the "welcome home - I'm home" thing, because you're not japanese, and no one force you to do it either, but please do not make fun of other culture.

why not? I'm allowed to make fun of other cultures. Some of them have funny customs. There are some customs I abhor, do not respect, and will never approve of, but on this, it's called humor. That's why the word fun is in there. lighten up a little. No one has bad intentions here unless you thrust it upon them.

We usually say something like "Honey, I'm home". Then Honey replies "Welcome home". Maybe that is odd to them? I embrace differences so I don't think it's crazy. Just different. Was just wondering if there was a reason.

is pissed because he wanted have the first word so he says "I'm home" even though he's already been welcomed home and knows that the rest of the family knows he's home, too. lmao Maybe it's control issues.
