Nothing I assume, we do see her reaction (happy tears) and he says he'll be coming back. As for what seemed like an emptied house, might be just his room specifically.
I got the impression that she's passed away and he was speaking with her spirit. I've friends and family who speak with their dead loved ones in a similar manner.

Yes I think that's as much of a possibility, especially in how it was left vague and up to interpretation.

His mom passed away. And he's talking to the memories of her. I usually do it too.
What happened to his mom though?
