They aren't blood related, and their parents marriage is no more. In some countries where same-sex marriage is legal, Jowoon and Haesoo would be free to marry. Even if it's taboo, it's not like they grew up together, just spent a few years as teens under the same roof.

But just like all characters are flawed, the taboo factor is also the crux of the plot. It is the backbone to how Jowoon and Haesoo are so conflicted, and not progressing, it is the backbone as to how Haesoo's mother is still influencing her independent son and Jowoon. It is the backbone to presumably the future plot with Leo shit stirring.
I think what feels wrong about step-siblings is the fact that they grew up together. People are usually less likely to fall for someone who they’ve considered family for so long. Even THEY feel guilty and discomfort when they got together initially. Their relationship isn’t healthy for everyone’s sake but it’s hard to let go of something you’ve been familiar with for 10 years.
I want Jowoon and Taku to hate fuck, then in the end none of the three get together lol. I understand the incest trope being sour, really do not get the appeal of blood brother x brother, or worse uncle x nephew, father x son vile. But with this one, to yaoi logic justify, they were only living together for a few, maybe even 2 years (?) and already teens.

At that age, it would be weird if for step kids to call their parents spouse mother/father too. Yes they were still teens, kids, but it's a different dynamic if they knew and lived each other as children. IRL yes it would be taboo, not illegal though, this is yaoi though, where Taku becomes a world famous photographer instantly, and Haesoo has an award selling book under his belt already despite his imposter syndrome, plus Jowoon is a famous actor (nepotism?).
