Yeah I was CRINGING at their interactions. But maybe the half-brother is in a way "showing off" his and his relationship with his father to the MC saying "you have no room or right in this relationship" sort of thing. Which in turn makes him feel more alienated and powerless

For those that are also reading down and dirty, killing and stalking and so forth, we know this will end in two ways: half brother dies or MC and half brother live happily ever after.

Also that father and son bond is waaaaaay off, one thing is half brothers, but father and son is another level
