The novel spoilers are helping me understand a lot I didn't pick up in the comic. Apparently Claude is actually a very loved ruler. This is because he overthrew his father, his brother and the nobles who sided with them. His father and brother were absolute monsters and it's no wonder Claude is so messed up.
His father committed horrible atrocities so when Claude overthrew and got rid of the rest of the family the citizens owe him a great debt. He saved them all.
Unfortunately growing up raised by such monsters left Claude deeply scarred inside.
Also Jennette does have magic. She is a chimera. But she has a powerful charm magic that can make almost anyone like her no matter what she says or does. There is a reason everyone can't help but fall in love with her. I'm not quite clear if she is aware of it or not tho.
However, Jennette can't actually make people truly love her. She can only make them like her. So in the novels she gets really devastated that Ijekiel comes to love Athy. Her "charms" only get her so much.
Spoon is changing a lot of the elements of the story. So the comic is deviating from the novel. I'm curious how much gets rearranged.
