Magic usually has various properties. Some derive from nature, others from inner ki, and some from surrounding energy. I think that magic is classified differently here as she is known as a witch, to which is the normal stigma of "black demonic magic". The staff/pole/sword thing that the prince carries is a conduit to support surround energy or inner energy. Even if you explained this well, it doesn't really change the fact that the story itself didn't state not show these factors that well. They neglected a lot of factors and small details which affected the story as a whole and made it confusing to most.
