'Fools' is probably the first manhwa where I can dutifully say I loved reading every second of it. It was a masterpiece, an art where so many different meanings and feelings were conveyed in a way that was relatable and applicable to lay people like myself. The small fights and misunderstandings that we come across with the people in our lives - how much we neglect these and just try to move on to avoid getting into a bigger conflict, yet actually as this manhwa has shown us, talking with that person directly about your misunderstandings can bring a much happier result and a happier relationship. The transparency in seeing each other eye to eye with honesty and not having the need to hide anything, the longing and yearning you have for that special person and loving them for who they are - these were beautifully depicted through the two main characters, Eun-Gi and Jeong-Woo. One of my favourite scenes was when Eun-Gi was stating all of the things he loved about Jeong-Woo in chapter 34, "I miss you and I miss your laughter. Ah no, to be honest, you're still cute when you aren't laughing. The way he talks is nice and his voice too, the socks that he wears are always cute, like him." And once they begin to date, I cannot emphasise enough how heartfelt and endearing these scenes were. Might I also add, the story is narrated by Eun-Gi, in a way that is real but so beautifully poetic. For e.g. in chapter 68 when Eun-Gi was walking Jeong-Woo to the taxi to meet his ex, "I was just simply as nervous as a child holding an ice cream cone that was beginning to melt under the blazing heat of the sun. Even if the tip of my tongue grazed it, it'd be too sweet, too cold, and make me feel parched for more, that's what our relationship felt like" and the description of how Eun-Gi felt when Jeong-Woo had confessed to him in chapter 40 was so relatable and just showed how much he really liked Jeong-Woo "What should I do? What should I say? What expression should I put on? Do I have the permission to laugh? What expression am I showing on my face? In fact, I can't remember how to blink or breathe".
Besides the descriptive and poetic nature of the story, I liked the idea that this was simply put: a story about two people who are in love and the daily obstacles they are having to face. In the end, they come to accept that even though they can't reveal their relationship and even though they don't know what will happen to their relationship in the future, they would like to stay in each other's lives in the distant future. And in real, they continued to stay together and put the time and effort in their relationship even after Eun-Gi had graduated. All in all, I loved this manhwa, the art, the narrative, the originality, the characters-how even the characters we once viewed as obstacles at the start such as Joo-Hyun turned out to be really understanding and caring. It wasn't all about 'that's the antagonist, therefore they're bad and will remain bad' like in most female rivals.
Anyway, let's end this review by saying it was an absolutely beautiful read, one that I will never forget and one that I highly recommend for people to read. Till next time people ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
