He seems like an older brother figure to me. i mean i know he's harsh and more harsh than you want but he's not an idiot and speaking from experience sometimes family are harsh on you because they really care and their panic comes out as harsh words..

Its been a while so don't exactly know where in the novel the manga has caught up from but they do separate the chapters according to her age so if you fin out how old she is im sure you can find it (although they are pretty far in the novel so i would say maybe beginning middle area)
