Kaname/Zero actually makes sense. They had a long extensive history and Kaname's pureblood status would have made any kind of romance between them pretty much impossible. Not to mention Zero's hunter status, fear and hatred along with the expiration date.
So there was actual gravity there. Kaname canonically found Zero attractive, the ending of the original manga indicated he loved Zero (as well as Yuki). We have endless scenes of them showing an understanding for each other that they didn't show to anyone else.They had every single point of an epic romance going for them.
Ai and Ren do not.

I think they're talking about outside manga. i remember reading about it in a character interview or CD or something.
Matsuri Hino has been in with Kaname x Zero for a while. In interviews she's said Zero found Kaname attractive too.
