I think she was a woman to begin with but a very unattractive one especially going by that era femininity standards (women are supposed to be slender and muscles are a bit NO NO)...at least that's the way I understood it

Was the general a man or a butch looking woman to start with? Cause if the general was a woman, why the need to change the general's appearance if the emperor wanted the general as his wife? Also really douchy move of the emperor, he wants the general, but he wants the general to be a weak and pretty girl first.
