I think it was just a mistake, since in the author notes he was 28, then a year and a half later, and when his age is next mentioned it's 31 (not sure which chapter but its season 2), and fanboy is 25 I think. He would be at most 30.
Supposedly he's 31, but I think that's a little high if they've only known each other a year and a half. In the author's notes at the end of the last season, he was 28 with fanboy at 23 in his senior year of college. Even if his birthday already passed it would still be 30.
