I wonder if the ex wasn't abusive... he flinched when MC spoke about his cooking
I was thinking they just had a bad break up when the Roomate loved the Ex a lot. Maybe the cooking thing brings back memories about his Ex, like maybe the Ex liked his cooking a lot too or was a chef or something.
My predictions: MC's parents either died or left him and so the boxes are full of stuff from his precious childhood when they were still around. Roommate had a bad break up with partner he really liked so he's forcing sex onto MC to fill the gap—so MC is like a rebound of sorts. It explains why MC feels like Roommate doesn't actually care about MC sometimes, especially when they have sex
