To me, the popularity of He Tian is the classic case where Yaoi/Shounei Ai romanticize abuse/rape as romantic. He uses violence and intimidation to get Mo Guan Shan to stay with him. He forces the guy to wear jewelry as if he were his pet... he is that guy in the PSA ad that grabs his partner by the neck and demands obedience. The gross part is that readers actually justify his actions with a bunch of excuses and since it's yaoi world, the victim actually falls in love with his abuser. What would be sad in real life and a big sign of lack of self esteem. I don't know, I wouldn't mind the character if more readers just liked him for the kink of liking another alpha male who rapes/abuses his partner into submission but what I hate about He Tian is the fact that it proves that the genre does normalize possession, aggression, stalking, forceful violence as something romantic and that a guy does because he is in love.
a lot of seme in toxic webtoon series' (ie. Hogu Hagyeongsu). it's so annoying how they are still popular and the series get a very high rate while nicer semes in manga got lower rate just because its fucking b&w. it's so dumb.
