It sounds like you don't know what a BDSM dynamic is "supposed to be". The only universal rule in BDSM that it's consensual, and that a Dom or top takes responsibility for the sub or bottom's safety if you're doing something that puts them at risk. It's a very diverse world.

Most people who like BDSM don't practice lifestyle D/s, they just do it in the bedroom, so some couples switch roles. Kayama mostly tops from the bottom. He definitely wasn't set up as a sub, but even if he had been, that wouldn't say anything about the mangaka's understanding of BDSM. It would mean they wanted to challenge your assumptions and stereotypes.
