He never was, the ring was for the guy since the beginning, in the animated version you see that the uke says something like :"I came back because of the ring" because the seme put the ring on him before falling asleep. (and like I don't remember when but he said the ring was for someone really special to him) The idea here is the start of a love left behind, a story that never started before, you see the seme falling in love with him when he saw the guy looking at the rain like it was some sort of blessing, when everyone was scared he was happy, that's more highlighted on the animated piece (also they put the "Clair de Lune" from Debussy as music and honestly it was beautiful) everyone is looking at the rain, but the seme only looks at the uke.
So too clear things: it's the beginning of a love story that never started in high school when they were just too young and shy to make it happen, it's like destiny, they were meant to be ^^
