Lol, just keep in mind that Wei Ying's new body used to belong to Jin Ling's uncle, who got kicked out of the Jin sect for being gay (allegedly). Not a spoiler since they literally tell you in the first chapter. It's pretty much all you need to remember from that first part of the novel that becomes relevant later. (=・ω・=)
Ok, so just finished the novel (thank you Exiled Rebels Scans!) and:
1- I don't regret anything. My life is complete.
2- Lan Zhan (Er-gege!!!!) and Wei Ying are now in my top 3 best yaoi couples of all times. Their relationship is so insanely great it gives me goosebumps.
3- Even if they skip the steamy stuff in this manga, I honestly hope they at least don't skip the first time they have sex, even a fade to black would be fine as long as its acknowledged they did it, because honestly, this is one story in which the sex is so important the plot cannot move on without it.
4- Even though the novel is insanely great and I will recommend it to the end of my days, I don't think you loose anything by reading the manga instead (other than the novel being already finished). The anime makes a mess of things, but at least so far, the manga has been fairly faithful, and although you loose a bit of character development and instropection that helps you understand better, as well as some exposition that makes the story flow more easily, the fact that you can see the characters' expressions is a big plus. In a perfect world, I would say read both at the same time, it's really the best possible way to experience this story.
